The North Island Farmers & Artisans Market scene has exploded like an overripe seed pod in the past few years thanks to the efforts of volunteer coordinators. What began as the occasional table at our local festivals has blossomed into a regular Saturday farmer's market on the beach in Port McNeill during the summer, with the Port Hardy's Farmers Market taking root in Carrot Park in the summer of 2018.
Locally grown and sourced foods are often grown in environmentally kind conditions. Generally, less pesticides, herbicides, and harsh fertilizers are used in their growth. Transportation and refrigeration of produce is less of an issue, which results in a lesser carbon footprint from eating local. Economically, it helps create jobs and micro economies, and farmers' markets being hosted in parks and public spaces is a social, community building event for all ages.
In addition to being open to all ages, buying food from farmers' markets is becoming increasingly easier to all income levels. There is currently a coupon program being operated by B.C. Farmers Markets that is available on the North Island. Through this program, B.C. Farmers Markets collaborate with community organizations and member markets to provide farmers' market coupons to lower-income families and seniors. Donating to the coupon program is a charitable tax deduction for people interested in helping others eat well and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Come on down to your local park, buy some food and support local business and agriculture. It's a positive thing.
