"What We Heard About Poverty in B.C." A report now available from the Province of British Columbia

The results of poverty forums held by the Provincial Government have been made available. For those interested in exploring the issue, Shane Simpson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, is inviting you to participate in a town hall meeting on the results of their report. Following is the invite, provided to the MWHN.

Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, July 17, 2018

"Tackling poverty and inequality is the key to making our province more prosperous for everybody.

That’s why we reached out to British Columbians and asked them to share their thoughts, hopes and ideas about how to address the issues of poverty and inequality in our province.

I am pleased to share the resulting report, titled, What We Heard About Poverty in B.C., with you and want to personally thank you for all the contributions you and your organization have made in your community to fight poverty.

We heard from thousands of people and many organizations between October 30, 2017 and March 31, 2018, in a variety of forums, including:

  • 28 community meetings with more than 2500 participants

  • Dedicated Indigenous consultations with more than 1600 participants

  • Online feedback from over 1600 individual submissions & 68 policy briefs

  • 100 Stakeholder led sessions with more than 2700 participants

  • Over 100 meetings with local governments and Indigenous leaders, businesses and chambers of commerce, labour unions and organizations, non-profit organizations and community groups

If you haven’t had an opportunity to explore our website yet, you can click here to see all the contributions we received.

More than half the people who participated are living in poverty or had lived experience of poverty. For many, it was the first time they had an opportunity to share their thoughts with government.

It is my hope that this report will deliver a better understanding of what it’s like to live in poverty in British Columbia and give people insight into the work ahead as we develop B.C.’s first Poverty Reduction Strategy.

I would like to invite you to participate in a Telephone Town Hall regarding the report on Thursday, July 19th from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The phone number and access code are below and I would ask that you RSVP to help us keep track of numbers.
