June 15, 2018 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Elder abuse is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world, and an issue which deserves the attention of the international community. (United Nations, 2011)
The date is an annual international observance day which came about as a result of UN resolution 66/127, proposed during the Second World Assembly in Ageing in 2011. Elder abuse knows no bounds of gender, class, race, or any other social determinant. Some elderly are more vulnerable than others, and one of the mechanisms we have to fight this situation is awareness.
The UN, seniors associations and caring people around the world are calling on you to wear purple June 15th, and allow the dialogue on elder abuse to seep into our everyday lives. It's important.
